Rome has been a force the European history since the foundation about 2,700 years ago. First it was the center of the Roman Empire, and today is the heart of the Catholic Church. So on a vacation to Rome you will be able to see a lot of the remains of the ancient Rome.
One of the most impressive relics of the ancient Rome is the Coliseum. It is the largest amphitheatre in the city, and originally it had room for 55,000 spectators. Here the citizens of the city could be entertained with gladiator fights and fighting against wild animals.
The Coliseum was built by Emperor Vespasian in the year 72 AD. It was just one of many coliseums around the Roman Empire; from Nimes and Arles in France to El Djem in North Africa. Even though there have been destructions, missing maintenance and thefts, the Coliseum are still an impressive sight.
Another must see sight in Rome is the St. Peter's Basilica; also named the St. Peter's Cathedral. This building is almost the definition of the Vatican State. Even though it just physical is the center of the smallest country in the world, it is the heart of the Catholic religious community.
Many famous architects have set their distinctive mark on the St. Peter's Basilica, and it took more than hundred years to build it. Inside there are many fine sights, but the most exiting is without doubt the dome by Michelangelo. From here you have a fantastic view of the whole country.
You also have to see the Sistine Chapel; the main chapel of the Vatican Palace. The ornamentation was finished by Michelangelo with his famous fresco named Judgment Day in 1541. Today it is seen as his masterpiece from his mature years. The work took seven years, and two windows and an altar have to be removed to make room for Michelangelos work.
Many years ago Rome was the center of international trade. The finest craftsmen moved to the city and started to processed material from all the exotic places of the Roman Empire.
You can still find handicraft in Rome. In Palazzo delle Esposizioni you can buy designs from a lot of famous, Italian designers. If you are more into clothes, you find all the large, Italian fashion houses around the Spanish Steps. Here you can buy Prada, Gucci and Giorgio Armani.
You can also find several markets in Rome. Food is found at Campo deFior and old books at Mercato delle Stampe. Everything else can be found at Porta Portese. - 29959
