Birthstone Mothers Jewelry To Honor A Mother

By Amy Carrington

Jewelry for mother's can be a representational type that signifies the mother's children. The representation is achieved by using birthstones and can consist of the childrens' stones and include the father and mother's stones as well. Birthstones represent the month in which a person was born.

Jewelry that is linked to twelve months or signs of the zodiac goes all the way back to the Bible. The High Priest in the temple often wore a garment adorned with the twelve stones that represented the twelve tribes of Israel.

Legend has it that the first symbolic jewelry for mother's consisted of two wedding bands joined together by the birthstones of the sons of the mother. Mother's rings were very popular in the 1960's and the birthstones were usually set from left to right in order of birth.

Birthstones are given certain attributes or powers that have come down from age to age. The person wearing the stone is supposed to get power from it. A mother wearing a child's birthstone is said to receive those attributes. A mother with a child born in March would wear an Aquamarine. Aquamarine is supposed to bring love and affection to the wearer who is supposed to be able to make friends easily. The mother would be well respected and liked in the community and should have many friends. Folklore also states that the child will be protected from all ill as long as the mother wears that birthstone.

Mothers jewelry in this day and age comes in many guises. There are necklaces with drops of stones, bracelets with bands of birthstones and broaches that sparkle and shine with the stones of the family. Rings continue to be most popular probably because of the age old belief that rings symbolize eternity or a never ending circle. Wedding bands are always worn on the left ring finger because this finger is associated with the heart. The mother's ring can also be worn on this particular finger.

Some mother's rings come in straight lines of stones around the ring while others can have one central prominent stone with several smaller ones positioned around it. Sometimes the largest stone will represent the mother with other stones representing the children the larger the oldest child and then graduating down from there. Mother's jewelry, be it a ring or necklace is a wonderful representation of family. - 29959
