While gold lockets are becoming more popular, the most preferred lockets are those that are made of silver. Other locket necklaces available are platinum, leather, onyx and garnet. They also come in many shapes and styles.

Locket necklaces come in different types. The most common are keepsake lockets, antique lockets, jewelry lockets and picture lockets.

a. Picture lockets or photograph lockets

These are typically oval- or heart- shaped pendants that can be opened to reveal a space used for storing one or more photographs. Most picture lockets can hold a photograph or two. There are lockets that can hold four, six, even up to eight pictures. Picture lockets are generally enclosed on all sides and the photographs are secured by pieces of clear plastic.

b. Antique lockets

Antique lockets are naturally found in estate jewelry. These consist of bail, which can be attached to the necklace chain but is not fixed to the locket itself and is free to spin. This is called spinner lockets which is very popular during the Victorian Age. Antique lockets are very valuable which is why it is a much sought after investment.

c. Keepsake lockets

These are lockets that are designed with a glass or plastic to protect an item, which could fall out and become lost if the locket was repeatedly opened. They do not open like picture lockets. A glass pane is put at the front so that what is inside can be seen without having to open the locket. The usual items put inside a keepsake locket are locks of hair.

d. Jewelry lockets

Jewelry lockets are lockets that are more highly decorated with gemstones. They are filigree style lockets with a small cushion in the center. This is where a few drops of perfume can be added. This became very popular especially during the time when personal hygiene was restricted. What they do was to mask the odor of a person or their companion with perfume.

Locket necklaces can be stubborn and opening it can be difficult. Putting pressure can destroy the locket or cause damage to it.

To carefully open a locket, place the edge of the fingernail into the space between the two wings. Then open the latch by moving your nail back and forth. This will cause the wings to come apart. You can also use a small flathead screwdriver to gently open it.
