The Expansion Of San Francisco From Sleepy Hamlet To Full-Of-Activity Conurbation

By Jack Wagon

Some may find it hard to believe that San Francisco used to be a sleepy hamlet, which slowly transformed into a busy metropolis. Up till the mid'th century, San Francisco was not known to the rest of the world. It was only after the California gold rush, that the city gained popularity.

The place had been serenely quiet on the Pacific Ocean banks since long time. During 1769, a few travellers, moving from Mexico to Canada, led by Sergeant Jose Ortega, brought this town in to life from its deep sleep, and opened the doors of San Francisco to the rest of the world. The actual settlement started during 1776. Missionaries only came to the place in anticipation of the detection of gold in California that sent a large number of immigrants from all over the world. Its number of locals rose steadily. With the passage of time, San Francisco set up its name as a multi civilization, and financial centre of North America.

San Francisco has come a long way from its reputation of being a small, unknown town with very few inhabitants, no wealth and no commerce, except for a small trading post, and a Spanish military base. It has always been an ideal sea port, since the times of the Spanish conquistadors.

Its citizens had no knowledge of industry or trade, the paving way of the US factory owners to establish their individual trade in the town. Their citizens paid to buy hides from the genuine inhabitants, given that crop growing and farming animals were the major professions there. They produced leather articles, and they used to sell these things back to the local citizens.

With the discovery of gold, things changed overnight. San Francisco became an expensive place to live in, because of high demand, and supply of land, commodities, accommodation, and food items. Labourers would be paid higher in San Francisco than anywhere else in the country. In'69, the first transcontinental railway was completed. This opened new avenues of golden opportunities for people to make money by expanding their trade. The landscape of the town slowly changed with the construction of wooden homes. Once, all the land disputes were sorted out, the city was planned, and developed accordingly.

It did not develop systematically. It has seen eras of lawlessness, crime, and illegal activities. Natural disasters like earthquakes, and fire further ravaged the city. However, the spirit of the city, and its inhabitants did not extinguish.

Its Montgomery road beside the bay became a centre of business activities. San Francisco emerged as an outstanding sea port for Americans. More or less 500 ships were catered to, yearly from the port. America raised its business with other continents like Europe and Asia. San Francisco offers a trouble-free admission to the Arctic Ocean, which was needed for the hunting of whales. The skyline of San Francisco transformed spectacularly with the rise in number of church spires, chimney fumes and multi storey buildings.

The place made its position to the rest of the world by having the Panama Pacific elucidation during'15. The place kept on travelling freehand journeys on the ways of industrialization and trade. Nowadays, the town is recognized with the name of financial district of America. - 29959
